Yes, it's snowing! Where to ski and snowboard in the Netherlands?

Yes, snow in the Netherlands! As a kid we would walk up to the highest hill in Bloemendaal and snowboard down. Great times. However the hill was about 20 meters high so you tend to walk a lot. The highest mountain in the Netherlands is 400 meters and is located all the way down south in a location called Limburg. So if you want some serious skiing and don't want to drive to the alps what are your options?

Winterberg, Germany

The Sauerland Wintersport-Arena is the largest ticket network outside the Alps. With one ticket you have access to the lift facilities in eight ski regions in the Sauerland. That includes 74 ski lifts, 96 slopes and a total of 62 kilometers of pistes. The highest mountain is 668m. 3 months a year you can go there for very decent skiing and snowboarding experience. From Amsterdam the drive with your car is around 3,5 hours.
For more information check skiliftkarussell.de or www.winterberg.de

Spa, Belgium

Spa is 3 hours away a little closer then Winterberg but the highest mountain is 200 meters lower and therefore the changes of good snow is slimmer then in Winterberg. Check the snowheight before you book! Below two resorts we like.

The ski resort Le Monty – Lierneux is located in the Province of Lüttich (Belgium, Wallonia). For skiing and snowboarding, there are 0.9 km of slopes available. 2 lifts transport the guests. The winter sports area is situated between the elevations of 435 and 495 m.

The ski resort Ferme Libert – Malmedy is located in the Province of Lüttich (Belgium, Wallonia). For skiing and snowboarding, there are 0.5 km of slopes available. 1 lift transports the guests. The winter sports area is situated between the elevations of 405 and 500 m.

Concluding. If you want to go for a weekend skiing, Winterberg is the place to go. But don't aspect to much!
The alps are only a hour flight away. Daily flights to Austria and France from Schiphol and Eindhoven makes it very affordable. Check companies like Transavia.

Have fun! From your Team Expat Guide
